LA Animal Services Celebrates 'LA Spay Day' with Wallis Annenberg Foundation to Match Donations Up to $50,000 to Spay and Neuter Trust Fund
05/22/2023

Los Angeles, May 22, 2023 –  It's 'LA Spay Day' in May, and LA Animal Services is proud to announce that the Wallis Annenberg Foundation has pledged $50K in matching funds for donations made to the Spay and Neuter Trust Fund. 'LA Spay Day' was created to encourage Angelenos to spay and neuter their pets while further creating awareness of the spay and neuter resources that LA Animal Services has to offer City residents. Donate today and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50K to help the pets in Los Angeles.

“Thanks to the Wallis Annenberg Foundation, this matching grant will help ensure pets in our Centers are spayed or neutered before being adopted and that pets residing in Los Angeles are granted access to affordable spay and neuter surgeries,” said Annette Ramirez, Interim General Manager for LA Animal Services. “There are both health and behavioral benefits to spaying and neutering your pets, and it is also the law in the City of Los Angeles that all cats and dogs four months and older be spayed and neutered.”

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Your Pet

Spaying and neutering are humane and life affirming means of ending euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets who are unable to find permanent homes. When you spay or neuter your pet, you’re helping to prevent unwanted pet births. There are also health and behavioral advantages to spaying (your female pet) or neutering (your male animal companion) that include:

  • Curbing aggressive behaviors like biting and fighting.
  • Reducing roaming -- your pet wanting to escape to find a mate.
  • Lowering risks of cancers. By spaying and neutering your pet, you are also preventing serious and sometimes fatal medical conditions such as pyometra, a serious infection in female dogs or testicular cancer in male dogs.

Need Assistance Spaying or Neutering Your Pet?

LA Animal Services makes it easy and convenient for pet owners to ensure their furry family members get spayed or neutered. By simply going online to laspayneuter.com, LA City residents can complete the application, and their free or discounted spay/neuter voucher will be emailed directly to their inbox. Each household is eligible for discounts for 3 dogs and 3 cats. Community cats and stray dogs do not qualify for this program.

Spay/neuter vouchers cover the full cost of a companion animal’s sterilization at participating veterinary hospitals, spay/neuter clinics and mobile spay/neuter clinics.

The free Spay & Neuter Certificates/Vouchers and discount Spay & Neuter Coupons are available online for Los Angeles City residents, or are available for pick up at any of our six LA Animal Services Centers.

Citywide Cat Program (Trap-Neuter-Return Free Roaming Cats)

If you are interested in spaying or neutering community cats, LA Animal Services launched the Citywide Cat Program in November 2022 that provides individuals and community groups with resources to spay and neuter free roaming, unowned cats or community cats in the City of Los Angeles. The program includes education and outreach efforts, and trap-neuter-return (TNR), which humanely traps free roaming cats, spays or neuters and vaccinates them, and returns the sterilized, now healthier, cat back to their natural outdoor home. These sterilized cats will no longer be able to produce litters, causing the number or unowned community cats on our streets and backyards to decrease over time.
